Five Knighton Juniors recently took part in the 2008 HSBC Wee Wonders
qualifier at Summerhill Golf Club. Each player has 36 shots to advance the
ball as far around the course as they can. James Reynolds came first in the
7-8 age group. Jamie Thomas and Paul Reynolds came first and second
respectively in the 9-10 age group. Jack Price and John Reynolds came second
and third in the 11-12 age group (and there was only just over a yard
between the first three, so John only narrowly missed out). James, Jamie,
Paul and Jack will now play in the regional (Welsh) qualifier at the Vale of
Glamorgan Golf Club on July 8th in their respective age groups. Quite an
achievement to get 4 out of 5 through to the next round!!! Other golf club

06.01.2008 : Knighton Golf Club
AGM - Chairman's Report: Put simply, my (David Reid) overview of the
year is that it has been a considerable success. I doubt the course has ever
looked or played better or for longer, thanks, in part, to the
unpredictability of this summer's weather but more so to the care and time
lavished on it by Syd, Ivor, Fred and Adrian.
The weather may well also
account for the overall drop in the numbers taking part in weekend
competitions. However, I am happy to argue this is more than made up for by
the terrific achievement, under David Hawkes' captaincy of winning the
Brecon and Radnor League for the second time - the only club, so far to have
done so. A great year; a great captain!
The course was good, the golf was
good and, I would say, the club itself fired, for the most part on all
cylinders. Membership numbers held pretty solid. Communication and
organisation as always, with Doug at the helm, (and his brother in the
galley) was faultless. Outside of membership our only other source of
revenue, namely the bar, was, as last year, manned and organised with
incredible dedication by David, by Doug, Alan, Wayne, Shaun, Rob, Simon - my
apologies if there is a phantom barman I have missed... And the money once
it had gone over the counter and into the coffers was more than ably
administered and accounted for by our very own Treasurer, Mr Simon McDade.
Simon thank you for guiding us safely to a healthy end of year position.
My
thanks also to this year's Ladies captain, June Williams and, with his 3rd
hat on this evening, Doug as captain of the Seniors. Both sections continue
to flourish and genuinely participate as an integral part of Knighton Golf
Club - as indeed they are.
Mention must also
be made of the success of the Juniors - 63 members out of a total of 213 is
amazing - but not only that - both the 'A' Team and the 'B' Team came within
a couple of points of winning their respective leagues. Thanks of course to
Kevin and to Simon but also to everyone else who helps up here on a
Thursday, Wayne, Kim, Christine, Anne, Alan, certainly not forgetting Ros
and other parents - as well as Lilian who takes an active interest in the
section and has donated trophies for them to play for.
A good year; a lot achieved, out on the
course, a lot achieved around the club house. Still more to do, there always
will be.
Next year our priorities must be the final
and decisive battle with the road which we, as a committee, have entrusted
into the hands of next year's Immediate Past Captain, David Hawkes; as soon
as we can the putting green must be redesigned and re-laid in line with the
commitment we entered into when accepting the grant from the Powys Community
Chest and thirdly, we hope, next year will at last see water to the greens
courtesy of our landlord and, of course, Syd.
Given the spirit, the willingness and the
commitment shown by this years committee I believe we can achieve all those
things plus the numerous other 'essentials' that will suddenly loom up at us
when we least expect them. Thanks to all of you, we are, I genuinely believe
in very, very good shape.
Good luck to John with the Seniors, Denise
with the Ladies, Stuart with the Juniors and above all Shaun and Colin for
next year. Its going to be a good one! Well, it had better be!

03.08.2007 : A strong field of 33 golfers took part in Knighton Golf Club's annual
President's Day Competition. Club President Mrs Lillian Bright thanked
everyone who played in the event and said how lucky they had been with the
weather. She also thanked everyone who has helped and does help in the
running of the club throughout the year. This year's club captain Dave Hawkes thanked Lillian on behalf of the club for all the excellent prizes
she had provided for the competition. A number of golfers ended up among the
prize winners. Those who got twos on the day were Roger Mortimer and Oliver
Richards. The longest drive on the seventh prize was won by Roger Mortimer,
while the nearest the pin on the 15th was Oliver Richards. In the Junior
section, Tom Powell was first with 30 points, with Wayne Farmer the
runner-up on 25 points. In the Senior section, Fred Davies was first with 34
points. Doug Williams came in second and just behind in third was John Ellis

02.07.2007 : After some superb scoring all around it was Paul Ellis who came through to
win the June Medal on count-back. Paul took first place with a superb
(73-9-64) beating Lee Sutton into 2nd place (85-21-64) and John Ellis 3rd
(77-12-65). Paul Ellis came to the fore once again in the Ford Mixed Pairs
Trophy. Partnering Bernard Dodd they scored an excellent 42 pts to take
first place leaving Brian Jones & Richard Demynn just behind in 2nd. There
was the usual large turnout for the Eric Bright Trophy which saw Lee Roberts
fly home with a magnificent 43 pts. Kim Price came 2nd with 41 pts and Steve
Davies 3rd on 39 pts. In the June Stableford it was once again Lee Roberts
heading the field (somebody cut him please...) scoring a fine 41 pts leaving
Wayne Aspley just behind in 2nd shooting 40 pts and Colin Badlan 3rd
on 38 pts. And it was almost the hat-trick for Lee (snip snip) as he just
missed out on count-back in the Hall Of Fame Trophy. This time however,
Graham Collins took first place scoring a fine 40 pts leaving Lee Roberts in
2nd also on 40 pts and Fred Davies 3rd just one behind with 39 pts.
27.06.2007 :
A fine performance from Kevin Collins, Stuart Collins and Kay Taylor saw
them win the May Bank Holiday Texas scramble ahead of Adrian Turner, Brian
Jones and Sue Jones.
It was a busy June in the ladies section with matches against Leominster
(lost) and Summerhill (halved). Several ladies also entered the Summerhill
Open with the pairing of Nicola Rogers and Jackie Morris gaining first place
with a superb score of 42 pts. Other notable mentions from the same
competition were June Williams with nearest the pin and Sandra Hodnett who
managed the longest drive. And if that excitement wasn’t enough, June
Williams scored an excellent 40 pts to win the Lillian Bright Trophy by one
ahead of Gill Deakins (39 pts). Then came the Tonia Trophy in which Fran
Lewis triumphed after coming in with a net 71 followed closely behind in
second place by Kay Taylor (net 72). And finally to finish the month were
the Al Marriott Trophies. In division 1 Fran Lewis once again produced the
goods to take first place (31 pts) with Ann Hobson second (28 pts) and in
division 2 June Williams (33 pts) just managed to hold off Terry Ann
Griffiths (32 pts). Just room for a couple of mens results, the Captains
Roll-Up was won by Wayne Aspley (34 pts) with Lee Sutton (33 pts) in second
and Shaun Hobson (33 pts) in third and it seemed to be bandit country in the
the Cambrian Trophy as Rob Williams stormed in with 44 pts followed closely
behind by Will Hodnett (43 pts) and Phil Fourie (43 pts).
