Stand on the first tee and it's an uphill par four where the
fairway slopes wickedly to the left - so you have to judge your drive to
perfection. Big hitters can go for it but, remember, this is the first
hole and there's also a bunker sitting front left of the green, ready
for anybody who thinks he's capable of getting there in one but just
comes up short. The trick is to hit your drive over the ridge keeping
the ball on the left side of the fairway. This allows you to use the
local rule of a nudge if you run off the fairway and into the rough in
order to get the perfect lie that will give you a good shot into the
green. Once here there are generally two choices, go straight for the
flag and stop the ball quickly leaving the birdie putt or throw it up
onto the bank above and let it roll down onto the green (and normally
onto the bottom fringe) and two putting for par. The photo on the right shows the green looking back towards Knighton and Bry-y-Castell. |
